Sam Smoothy is starring a different kind of ski edit. After careful consideration, he and his filmer decide to leap into the unknown and travel and ski North Korea.
We just wanted to peek behind the curtain of a hidden country and show it to you.
Preparations
Already before entering the country, the two are overwhelmed by all rules and briefings. The consequences of a heavy night of celebrating Chinese New Year may have also played a role, in what makes Sam leave the North Korean consulate in a weird state.
However, shortly after the crew lands in Pyeongyang and is assigned to two guides. What follows is the typical arranged drinking and sightseeing trip through the country’s capital, before they are off to the mountains.
Skiing
Masikryong Ski Resort is not only home to the world’s biggest log cabin, but also to a wide variety of slopes, treeruns and even a little kicker. However, Sam quickly switches over to the bunny hill. The lack of snow and the absence of other skiers resulted in the decision to goof around over there with the guides.
Wrap-up
Skiingwise this trip was probably not worth looking back at. Rather it was this unknown country with its contrasts – the bizarre festivities, the feigned pomp, but also the hospitable and likeable people – what made their trip unforgettable.
