What makes a true legend? Certainly reliability has got something to do with it, and Tanner Hall has that in spades. Year after year, the indefatigable Ski Boss continues to do what he does best: ski like a goddamn animal, and make great ski videos. His 2018 release “Here After” is all we’ve come to expect from T, and a whole lot more.
It’s a testament to Tanner’s talent that I feel like I’ve written this sentence a few times already: Tanner Hall just keeps getting better and better. While nearly all the freeskiers of his generation have transitioned into other occupations, leaving the cutting edge of skiing behind, Tanner is still out there on the grind every day of the winter, and his work shows. No one would have expected two of the best shots of the season to come from a now 35-year-old veteran, but here we are. It’s 2018, and T is on one like never before.
“Here After” shows that Tanner is still a master of the time-honored ski flick formula—some groovy music, a bit of goofiness on the side, and otherwise, nonstop bangers. Every single ski shot is fire, falling in rapid succession. T shows game in urban, backcountry, park, big mountain, stepping up his level at each stage. The supporting cast—John Spriggs, Henrik Harlaut, Taylor Seaton, Parkin Costain, Pat Goodnough and more—are all on point. In a way, the flick feels like a tribute to the ski movies of the 2000s: nothing but rad ski action and thumping tunes. And there may be no other purveyor better of that hard-hitting formula today than Tanner Hall.
