Saves the dates: The countdown begins for the 2016 Freeride World Tour

As the snow begins to fall across the Northern Hemisphere, athletes across the world are preparing for another season of exciting action on the prestigious freeride tour. The 2016 edition of the SWATCH FREERIDE WORLD TOUR is destined to be one for the history books as it will host the most talented freeriders on the planet competing on legendary venues across the world for a total prize purse of 467,000 USD.

With a total of 62 athletes representing 14 countries, this diverse assembly freeride athletes is composed of 27 male skiers, 14 male snowboarders, 14 female skiers, and 7 female snowboarders. Some of the most recognized names in their respective disciplines will face-off during the five competition stops over the 2016 season. These finely tuned athletes will test their limits after putting in countless hours of physical and mental preparation over the summer months. Athletes will attempt to secure their name in freeride history as they push the limits of the sport on the road to the Bec des Rosses in Verbier, Switzerland.

As the sport of freeride grows by leaps and bounds every year, the SWATCH FREERIDE WORLD TOUR is proud to welcome Peak Performance as the Outerwear Partner for the tour this season. Founded in Åre, Sweden in 1986, Peak Performance develops gear as a result of an organic process marrying function with fashion.

LEARN MORE ABOUT ALL FIVE LEGENDARY VENUES:

Vallnord Arcalís, Andorra – January 23, 2016
Few people have even heard of this hidden gem deep in the Pyrenees mountains straddling the France-Spain border – but that doesn’t mean that this ski resort in Southern Europe isn’t gaining a reputation among hardcore freeriders for having incredible terrain and a welcoming alpine culture.

Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, France – February 6, 2016
The legendary alpine playground with a rich history of alpinism and freeride will once again welcome competitors to the Mont Blanc massif. With stunning vistas in every direction and a population of hardcore mountain enthusiasts, Chamonix is guaranteed to deliver an exciting event.

Fieberbrunn Kitzbüheler Alpen, Austria – March 6, 2016
Anyone who has been to the Austrian Alps know that mountain culture runs deep in the Tyrolean Pillerseetal valley. Fantastic terrain combined with a legendary event village and warm welcome from the local community is a treat for athletes and spectators alike.

Haines, Alaska, USA – March 17, 2016
Descending the impossibly steep and aesthetic terrain of the Alaskan mountain is every freerider’s dream. This dream becomes reality in one of the most unique venues in freeride history. Take a ride on the wild side as riders push their limits on the most revered lines in the world, far from any ski resort or chairlift.

Verbier, Switzerland – April 2, 2016
For over 20 years competitors have given their most astounding performances during the Xtreme Verbier. It’s a place where legends are made and broken on the most committing and infamous venue of the tour: the Bec des Rosses. The intimidatingly exposed pyramid-shaped peak has long challenged top riders to face their fears and put everything on line to the seek the glory of victory on the definitive grand finale of the tour.

Not all riders will get a chance to prove their skills on the last two stops (Haines/Verbier) as they are required to make the cut-off after the first three events for Haines, and again after Haines for Verbier. This reduction in the competitive field ensures the highest level of competition for these spectacular venues and amazing performances throughout the season.

Stay tuned to www.freerideworldtour.com for the latest news, developments, and stories as athletes prepare for the upcoming season.

IFFF : Degrees North, Best Film 2015

Text by l’IFFF

Countless helicopter runs give way to camping on glaciers, sledding, splitboarding and ski touring, and thankfully, creating awareness about the fragility and beauty of our environment is the bottom line of many of the films.

The good news is they still show a huge display of powder slashes, sick exposed lines and the exploits of outstanding athletes. Having evaluated all this –not without heated but respectful arguments- the Jury, under Regis Rolland’s lead, has decided to award the Best Film 2015 to TimeLine Mission’s Degrees North.

“Xavier De Le Rue is a true forerunner who is constantly taking snowboarding to the next level. The TimeLine guys keep pushing the limits to find new ideas for their films to make each of them an event in its own right.”

AWARDS 2015
Best Film: Degrees North
Best Cinematography: Sugar Mountain
Best Editing : Jumbo Wild
Freeride Spirit: Conquering the useless
Best Short Film: Journey to Kyrgyzstan
Best Pyrenean Short-Film: La Rumeur des Alpes
Public Award by La Dépêche du Midi: Odisea

The Freeride Spirit Award has been one of the most controversial, just as the definition of the award itself; everyone has a their own idea about it.”Conquering the Useless is in our own opinion the perfect example of a freeride film: sick runs, commitment, travels, an endless quest…an authentic film with a pretty modest budget that you really feel like watching again.”

We’d like to thank the town of Cauterets, Cauterets 6 Met, our partners, the media and mostly all of you who were here to share these unforgettable moments with us. See you next year!

A historic Dew Tour slopestyle just ended in Breckenridge

What a day it was at Breckenridge, Colorado to close out the 2015 Winter Dew Tour in style—bluebird skies, a few inches of fresh snow, and a top-notch slopestyle course waiting for women’s and men’s ski finals.

girls dew tour slopestyle

The women took to the course first, their final having been postponed due to yesterday’s snowstorm, and the first big surprise of the day came when 13-year-old Kelly Sildaru—long hailed as “the future of women’s freeskiing”—made good on the hype in her first Dew Tour appearance, promptly winning the slopestyle with a run including 720s and switch 900s in both directions and top-tier rail tricks. Veteran competitors Tiril Sjåstad Christiansen and Emma Dahlström, in second and third respectively, had to give up the top rung to their young colleague today, and are surely wondering (along with the rest of the women’s field) how this young phenom can possibly be beaten in the future.

Then it was time for the men. The level of this competition was very, very high—with perfect conditions, nobody had any excuses today for not putting down their very best run. That was immediately evident when the first two skiers out of the drop-in, last-chance qualifiers Fabian Bösch and Øystein Bråten, both posted scores in the high 80s.

From there on out it was pretty much a slugfest, with few falls and each run looking more stomped than the rest. With the notable exception of Alex Beaulieu-Marchand, whose rightside double cork 12 gave him some trouble today, every skier put down at least one clean run.

Gus Kenworthy set the highest bar during the first run: rightside 450 on, continuing 270 off; leftside blind 360 swap, continuing 270; leftside double cork 1080 blunt; rightside double cork 1260 mute; a snappy switch 270 on, misty 450 off the trapezoid rail; and switch left and right 1080 japan to wrap things up. Score: 92.2.

Standings after the first run

Following Gus, McRae Williams, Jossi Wells and James Woods all put down big runs that on any other day might have taken the lead—but after the dust cleared from Run 1, it was apparent that it would take something truly extraordinary to knock Gus off the top spot.

That “something” didn’t come in Run 2 despite other skiers’ best efforts. Antoine Adelisse brought out the triple cork 1080, but couldn’t put it down clean, and the rest of the field looked to clean up their runs even more, opting for the most part to stick with their planned runs and lay on the finishing polish.

Jossi Wells was able to do that best, with a beauty of a run that included impeccable rail composure including probably the best afterbang of the day, and a switch double cork 1440 at the bottom that helped him scoot into second place, bumping Fabian Bösch into third.

Jossi’s afterbang is on a whole different level

But at the end of the day, no one could touch Gus, who’s now won back-to-back Dew Tour slopestyles, and that just nine months after a knee injury.

“Today everybody put down runs. The level of riding was just insane,” said Gus. “I feel really proud to walk out on top.”

All in all it was a fine slopestyle display featuring plenty of highly refined tricks, if somewhat lacking in the creativity department. With ABM unable to back up his highly unique rail line on his jumps and Henrik Harlaut failing to make the finals, there weren’t a whole lot of unexpected, unusual, or unconventional tricks thrown on the slopestyle course today. But the tricks that were thrown, with very few exceptions, were all very polished—and that’s never a bad thing.

David Wise steals first place at Dew Tour Men’s Halfpipe on the last run of the night

After a heavy fall of snow yesterday at the Winter Dew Tour in Breckenridge, the women’s ski slopestyle final was postponed until today, while the halfpipe was scraped clean for last night’s men’s ski halfpipe final.

To be honest, the first minutes of the competition didn’t provide a great show between speed issues, powder in the pipe, crashes and a younger generation that doesn’t seem quite ready. We missed Justin Dorey, Torin Yater-Wallace (recovering after serious disease), even Simon Dumont. But soon Birk Irving impressed with his down-the-pipe flat 3, Taylor Seaton flew with style high over the coping, and Beau-James Wells confirmed his place on top. Kevin Rolland managed to land a nice run, David Wise crashed, and the doors seemed open for the younger riders. Sadly, not all the skiers could enjoy this praise: Kris Atkinson, for example, who didn’t grab and went about as high as the girls in the pipe (sorry for the comparison).

In the second run, Beau-James confirmed his place at first, pushing his score above 90 and making us think we were wrong to doubt the new generation of pipe skiers. We started to think that style would win the night (you will understand watching the run), but dropping last, David Wise went big, technical and clean to steal first place. Yes, he deserved it, but we were dreaming of a different happy ending.

The first major Superpipe contest of the 2015/16 season is over, delivering an awesome show and displaying kids who will become the new legends in the next five years. I heard a lot of people talking about missing “the legends” of the sport, but people said the same back when David Wise and Kevin Rolland entered the game, too. These new faces will hopefully push freeskiing in the right direction. Let’s hope, but for now let’s congratulate the boys who did their best in difficult skiing conditions.

The Mora Banc Skiers Cup Grandvalira – Skiers announced

The highly-anticipated roster of Skiers Cup team riders is finally available to the public after the two team captains have meticulously selected some of the finest riders in the world to compete on the slopes of Grandvalira, Andorra from January 30 to February 4, 2016. The 6th of edition of the Skiers Cup will take advantage of the the picture-perfect freeride terrain of the largest ski resort in the Pyrenees.

With a long history of progression and high-level freeskiing, this event takes a unique format where two continents (Europe vs. Americas) will face each other in two classic disciplines: big-mountain (freeride) and backcountry slopestyle (tricks off kickers and natural jumps). Team captains are sure to select riders that have the necessary skills to round-out a versatile team capable of excelling in both disciplines. The 16 riders comprising two teams face each other over two days, with one discipline per day, and two rounds per discipline for each pair of riders. The winners for each round will be determined and the points will be summed for a grand total of 32 possible points.

Team Americas always has a strong showing – from legendary big mountain heroes such as Seth Morrison (USA) to crossover veteran and film segment star Tim Durtschi (USA). Native Alaskan Nick Mc Nutt (CAN) is guaranteed to give viewers their money’s worth as he sends huge airs and stomps switch landings. Up-and-coming crusher Logan Pehota (CAN) will demonstrate how to send stylish airs with unique backcountry style as he competes with fellow North American heavy-hitters Grant Howard (USA), Parker White (USA), and three-time Skiers Cup veteran Tanner Rainville (USA).

riders

With such an impressive line-up, Permin’s Europe will need outstanding firepower to maintain their 3-2 lead over Cattabriga-Alosa’s Americas. Maybe the strongest freeskier to join Permin’s team will be Bene Mayr (GER) who has been pushing the progression of the sport to the next level for years and is also competing on the Freeride World Tour this season. Familiar Skiers Cup faces such as Markus Eder (ITA) and Sam Anthamatten (SUI) will secure Europe’s strength in backcountry slopestyle and big mountain, respectively. 2014 Freeride World Tour champion Loic Collomb-Patton will be demonstrating his big mountain skills alongside some of the most versatile riders from across the Alps such as Fabio Studer (AUT), Nico Vuignier (SUI), and Sam Favret (FRA).

James Woods Tops Dew Tour Slopestyle Semifinals

The men’s slopestyle semifinals just wrapped up at the 2015 Winter Dew Tour event at Breckenridge, Colorado, with ten skiers earning their places in Sunday’s finals, and an additional two spots open in the Last Chance Qualifier afterwards.

It was quite the way to kick off the 2015-16 competition season, with a slopestyle course featuring diverse rail options and some steep-looking jump landings, and a very stacked field of competitors with different approaches to the course. Some were out there to stomp their stock tricks, following an ever-more established route to the podium; others were looking to keep things fresh, like Henrik Harlaut, Alex Beaulieu-Marchand and Antti Ollila. A surprising number of skiers took to the course without poles.

Déjà qualifié, Jossi nous offre un run de 0 Spin

Jossi Wells earned his finals spot with his first run, and rewarded us all with an all-zero spin run for his second go-round.
Unfortunately flat light and rising winds kept the competitors guessing throughout the day, but several veterans and a few up-and-comers managed to cash in on clean runs and earn their tickets to the finals.

James Woods ended up qualifying first, followed by Jossi Wells who put down one of the most stylish runs of the day. Bobby Brown fought his way into third place with a stellar second run, bumping Alex Beaulieu-Marchand’s highly creative and technical run down to fourth. Other second-run qualfiers included Gus Kenworthy, Antoine Adelisse, Jesper Tjäder and Joss Christensen, who squeaked in at tenth.

Once the dust cleared from Runs 1 and 2, the ten skiers placed 11-20th in the semifinals got one more run in a Last Chance Qualifier, which ended up ushering Swiss talent Fabian Bösch and Norwegian Øystein Bråten into the finals as well.

The International Freeride Film Festival, is this weekend!

These days, it is difficult to ignore the conflicts of the modern world society: individuality, ignorance and fear of those who are different to us. Certainly, films and arts in all its shapes are instrumental in breaking up boundaries and sending positive messages.

Word by IFFF

This festival is our yearly chance to show the beauty of the Planet we live in, how travelling and discovering the unknown can open our eyes and spirit through the eyes and courage of passionate adventurers, making us aware of the wonderful and at the same time fragile nature we live in.

This year’s film selection tends to throw an optimist message, a will to create a better world, where our mountains and our Planet are given the value and recognition they deserve, in order to preserve them for generations to come.
