Want to be a mountain guide? Germany’s guide association is offering a ski evaluation camp

January 10, 2024

The Association of German Mountain and Ski Guides (Verband Deutscher Berg- und Skiführer, VDBS) is offering a ski evaluation camp in Garmisch-Partenkirchen on 23 February 2024. Registration is available at www.vdbs.de until 21 January. The day includes training in both on and off-piste conditions, and offers anyone interested in becoming a mountain guide the chance to have their riding ability evaluated, at no cost and without the pressure of an official test. Experienced mountain guides will lead the training and provide tips and information about their field of work.

“The VDBS is very keen to promote young talent,” explains Michael Schott from the VDBS Executive Committee. “The aim of the evaluation camp is to give those interested feedback on their performance level without the pressure of being observed, and to gain more insights into the profession. After an extensive day on the slopes of Garmisch, everyone has well-founded feedback on their skiing level and can make a much better decision as to whether the profession of mountain guide is the right one and what the next steps are. Do you go straight into the aptitude test? Do I still need to work on my individual skills?”

With this offer, the VDBS wants to make it easy to get to know the profession without the stress of the aptitude test, which is mandatory before every training course starts. Extensive feedback from the coaches should help participants to better assess their own level. In addition, participants gain detailed insights into the everyday working life of mountain guides.

Registration for the camp is open until 22.01.2024 at www.vdbs.de. Safe parallel skiing on and off-piste is required. In addition, enthusiasm for various mountain sports disciplines and a basic interest in professional training as a mountain and ski guide are required. Participation is free of charge; ski pass, meals and travel costs must be covered by the participants themselves. 20 participants will be drawn by lot from all registrations.
