Kaunertal: it might not be a household name as far as ski areas go, but it's a name near and dear to the snowboard and freeski scene in Austria with a freestyle tradition going back nearly 30 years.

Besides one of Europe's first halfpipes, buzzing fall and spring parks, and unforgettable shoots like the Legs of Steel triple jump, Kaunertal has also always been known for its classic road gaps. So when we at Downdays were offered the chance to host an event as part of the 2022 Kaunertal Spring Sessions, we decided to do something special, and bring back the Kaunertal road gap tradition in a big way.

The Gaptastic Voyage

Our mission was clear: Build a legendary road gap setup in Kaunertal and invite a hungry crew of riders to get down upon it. Thus, the Gaptastic Voyage was born!

At this moment, a unique line of no less than three road gap jumps have sprung out of the snow in Kaunertal, and a crew of 12 riders from Austria and beyond are converging to explore the possibilities of this setup. It's a voyage into the unknown, and we're glad to have you along for the ride.

We're very thankful for the opportunity to create this special session and for the partners who have helped make it possible: Monster Energy, the Kaunertal Glacier, Snowpark Kaunertal and Somaland Agency. With this dream team, we're looking forward to paying tribute to some classic Kaunertal traditions, and maybe start a few of our own.

The schedule

The Gaptastic Voyage kicks off on Thursday and Friday, April 28-29 2022, with invite-only sessions on the gap jumps. These features are closed to the public, but you're more than welcome to come up and watch the action!

If you're looking to get in on the action yourself, make sure to come by Snowpark Kaunertal on Saturday, April 30. The Gaptastic Voyage will end with a public snowpark jam session and a Cash 4 Tricks Session on a gap-tastic rail feature hosted by Dan Hanka. You can some spring hot laps, grab a selfie with a pro rider, and who knows, maybe even score some cash with a hot trick on the rail.
