Flights have been cancelled, entire towns evacuated, and roads and train lines closed in Austria and parts of southern Germany due to massive snowfall in recent days, with some ski areas reporting over two meters of fresh snow.

Ski resorts are swimming in it: Saalbach has reported 270 centimeters of snowfall since January 1, while other resorts in Austria are even reporting more than 3 meters of fresh. The deluge is expected to continue this week, with significant snowfall forecast for Austria as well as Switzerland and France.

Meanwhile, avalanche conditions remain precarious, with the avalanche warning level set at 4 for most of Austria’s alpine regions. On Saturday, two skiers perished in an avalanche in Vorarlberg, while a ski tourer was killed in a slide at Teisenberg in Bavaria. Be safe out there!
