The 2020 Trailer Yard

By: Downdays August 31, 2020

To say that a lot has changed in the world in the past year, would be the year's biggest understatement. But at least one thing has remained constant: the yearly crop of ski films from creators big and small.

As crews and companies begin to drop the trailers for their upcoming releases, we're doing you the service of collecting all 2020 ski movie trailers right here in the Downdays Trailer Yard. Make sure to keep dropping by, as we'll update the list regularly.

Know a movie that's missing from the list? Drop us a message on Instagram or Facebook and let us know.

NOWhere | Owen Dahlberg

Release on December 2. @osapberg

They say: "Lupe and Owen spent the 2019/2020 season chasing snow in cities around the US, Spain, and France. The project features a few unseen shots from the 18/19 season as well. Dropping November 2nd."

We say: Urban heavy-hitter Lupe Hagearty keeps his nose to the grindstone on this solo effort with filmer Owen Dahlberg.

Bourn | Micah Evangelista

Release in fall 2021. @micahevangelista

They say: "The idea of 'home' resonates differently for everyone. For some, your hometown could be a place you’re trying to escape from, but for others it may have a magnetic pull that can’t be broken. In this two year film project, Micah Evangelista reflects on the places and moments that have helped shape his skiing and much of his youth. He now returns to some of his favorite spots around Mt. Baker with an eagerness and passion to ski them in ways he never has before. Full film coming fall 2021."

We say: One of the best skiers in recent memory to surface from the frothy Mt. Baker scene, Micah Evangelista probably isn't as well known as he should be. This promising two-year project should help remedy that when it drops next year.

Salute | Henrik Harlaut

World premiere October 20 in Annecy; online/TV release on November 10. @salute.2020

They say: "Salute is a two-year film by Henrik Harlaut. Salute is a project of passion that aims to get back to the core of freestyle skiing. Looking to the past while always pushing into the future. This is a Salute to Freeskiing."

We say: The new trailer for Henrik's latest 2-year project can only confirm what we've been suspecting: an all-out assault on the mountain from E-Dollo and a very stacked crew. Expect fireworks.

Featuring Henrik Harlaut, Øystein Bråten, Karl Fostvedt, Jacob Wester, Chris Logan, Clayton Vila, Noah Albaladejo, Cam Riley, Oscar Wester, Isaac Simhon, Morten Grappe.

Bliss | Lalo Rambaud

Annecy premiere on October 20. @lalo_rambaud

They say: The short movie will first be showed in a cinema in Annecy the 20th of october, then will be released on all digital platforms in a few weeks. Based on an original idea of Lalo Rambaud.

We say: A surprisingly cinematic debut from a French up-and-comer who looks like he's got something to prove. Epic voiceover included.

Featuring Lalo Rambaud, Tenra Katsuno, Mateo Socquet, Baptiste Mermillod, Tom Gratadour, Paul Marchande

Fluid | El.Makrell

Innsbruck premiere November 11. @el.makrell

They say: Water is the origin. It's our future. We are tied to it. We feel it when we are skiing. We feel something larger than ourselves. It connects us to our world. We ski through the cycle of water. This is our homage to water. Premiere: 11. Nov Freeride Filmbase - Metropol Kino, Innsbruck (AT).

We say: Innbruck's artful ski crew El.Makrell knows a thing or two about flow.

Featuring Ludwig Hagelstein, Rosina Friedel, Lukas Ellensohn, Raphael Hagen, Marc Welschinger, Armando Guetg, Jakob Siedersleben, Lucas Mangold, Lukas Schlickenrieder, Moritz Waas, Magnus Kramer, Magnus Granér, Jacques Summermatter, Jens Nilsson, Adrian Gaiser, Torge Nagel, Severin Guggemoos, Felix Gross, Jakob Aigner, Vilmer Ivarrsson, Luis Meier, Luis Eckert

Follow The Forecast | Blank Collective

Online release in October. blankcollectivefilms.com

They say: As snow sport enthusiasts, we live and die by the forecast. In 2020 BLANK Collective Films relinquished control: to the forecast. FOLLOW THE FORECAST chronicles THE BLANK COLLECTIVES winter adventures - from their deepest days to date, to first time mountaineering experiences, to rolling the dice on new locations, each objective is documented with classic brother and sister banter.

We say: Blank continues to fly the proud standard of Canadian give 'er mentality we've grown to know and love. Expect heaps of powder and gratuitous sendage from this squad of A-listers.

Featuring Stan Rey, Alexi Godbout, Josh Daiek, Chris Rubens, Aaron Blunck, Anna Segal, Jordy Kidner, Cody Townsend, Sam Kuch, Riley Leboe, Barclay Desjardins, Lexi Dupont, Ian Morrison, Alex Beaulieu-Marchand, Cole Richardson, Sage Cattabriga-Alosa, Drew Petersen

Subject 2 Change | Carnage

Coming fall 2020. @ski_carnage

They say: We made another movie somehow.

We say: Props to this rowdy Montana crew for a teaser that really makes you want to watch the movie. Looking forward to the carnage.

Finally | Ben Buratti

No release information. @ben_buratti

They say: After 2 months of confinement, Ben Buratti, the prodigy of French freesking, needed to feel what he was of capable again. As a setting, he chose his home mountain of La Clusaz. What skier doesn’t dream of finding themselves completely alone on their home mountain? A dream that generates a lot of emotion and unearths even more questions.

We say: A private La Clusaz sesh with one of France's hungriest senders — sounds like a win-win.

From Switzerland With Love | Laurent De Martin/Titouan Bessire

Online release this fall. fromswitzerlandwithlove.ch

They say: After being invited to film ski parts around the world over the last decade, the time has come for Laurent De Martin to switch from guest to host. LDM is born and raised in front of the Dents du Midi. This winter with his local friends, he invites skiers from different countries to spend good times& to enjoy the amazing possibilities of street & backcountry skiing the Région Dents du Midi offers.

We say: A longtime workhorse in the ski-movie game returns to his home turf to create something new, with a little help from his friends. Despite a poor snow year and an early season end, we're excited to see what Laurent and Titouan have accomplished in their first full-length endeavor.

der Tiroler und sein Piefke 2 | Midiafilm

Showing at the Freeride Film Festival this fall. dertirolerundseinpiefke.com

They say: Roman Rohrmoser and Felix Wiemers are good old friends who have been skiing together for over 10 years. One of them, the textbook German "Piefke" has been coming to Zillertal for 20 years, and the other, a Zillertal local, simply grew up there. Speaking the same language yet not understanding each other due to their dialects makes for a funny portrait about both athletes during what seems to be their best winter since forever. A lot of sick action, deep pow shots, ranging from misunderstandings to occasional skiing and boring daily routines.

We say: Have you heard the old joke about European heaven vs. European hell? In European heaven the Italians cook the food, the Germans do the organizing, and the Brits tell the jokes. In European hell the Brits cook the food, the Italians do the organizing, and the Germans tell the jokes. "Der Tiroler und sein Piefke" is German humor at its finest. To be fair, a good bit of Austrian humor too—which can only help the situation.

Go Go Go | Mike Henitiuk/Callum Pettit

October 5. @go.go.go.movie

They say: A simple story about friends traveling the Japanese country side via RV. With the world as their oyster, who knows what they'll find --> Shot on Super8 film.

We say: We were big fans of Mike Henitiuk & friends' Seeking Nirvana series, and are always excited to see what they've cooked up next.

Purple Mountains | Liars & Thieves/Teton Gravity Research

Watch it now. purplemountainsfilm.com

They say: "Our outdoor playgrounds are in peril and our votes this November will decide their future. Professional snowboarder Jeremy Jones has watched winters change drastically during his 45 years spent in the mountains. More extreme weather, fewer snow days, and economic strain on mountain towns. And yet, climate change remains a divisive issue. In the new film Purple Mountains, Jeremy seeks common ground in the heart of America's purple states, having honest discussions with individuals who don't see eye to eye with him."

We say: For over a decade, snowboard legend Jeremy Jones has been beating the drum of climate change awareness, trying to wake up not just the snowsports industry, but governments and legislators to the the threats of a warming world. Purple Mountains is his latest effort, as Jeremy sits down for some heart-to-heart conversations with those who aren't yet on board with his message.

Halcyon Days | LORE Films

Free 24-hour premiere on Newschoolers, 13 October. loreagency.us

They say: Halcyon Days (noun): a calm and peaceful period of time in the past. With everything going on nowadays, the title seemed even more fitting. Joona Kangas showed us around his hometown resort of Levi, Finland in the Arctic Circle. Jacob Hyllengren Larsson gave us a look into the ski scene within the city of Oslo, Norway. Torge Nagel and Lucas Mangold showed us around the seemingly endless different ski resorts surrounding Innsbruck, Austria. Last but not least Kai Mahler introduced us to the freestyle heaven known as Laax, Switzerland.

We say: A new comer to the ski-movie crop this year, Halcyon Days looks like a whirlwind tour through the core scene in Europe, from the frigid nights of Finland to the all-star parks of Austria and Switzerland. With guys like Kai Mahler getting plenty of screen time, this one ranks high on the anticipation list.

Featuring Joona Kangas, Kai Mahler, Eirik Moberg, Jacob Hyllengren Larsson, Anttu Oikkonen, Lukas Schlickenrieder, Lucas Mangold, Torge Nagel, Daniel Hanka, Tobias Huber, Miika Virkki, Aleksi Laitinen.

Magma II | Alex Hall & Hunter Hess

Dropping November 13. @magma.film

They say: MAGMA 2 starring Hunter Hess and Alex Hall dropping November 13. Video by Owen Dahlberg.

We say: Watch out B-Dog and E-Dollo; A-Hall and Hunter are on track to become skiing's new tag team. After last year's initial eruption in Magma, the boys are back again with more jaw-dropping backcountry antics.

Nothing | Level 1 Productions

Watch it now. @nothing_confidential

They say: Level 1 presents NOTHING. A multi-discipline short film about the relatable joy of riding down snow. Based on the life and times of Parker White. Skiing. Snowboarding. Powder Surfing. Filmed on location in Hokkaido & Mt Baker, WA.

We say: Level 1 pulled a sneaky on us! They said they wouldn't be making any more movies, and now here they are, promoting this Mt. Baker romp with Parker and the funky bunch. We're not mad, though—in fact, quite the opposite.

Featuring Parker White, Duncan Adams, Forest Bailey, Lucas Stål Madison, Matt Wainhouse, Patrick McCarthy. Directed by Freedle Coty.

Tanner Hall Forever | Frozen Ambrosia

Online on-demand release on 6 October. frozenambrosia.com

They say: With seven Winter X-Games gold medals and a career spanning twenty years, Tanner Hall has cemented himself as an icon and legend in the sport of skiing. Now, at age 35, he’s decided to enter the Freeride World Tour; a five-stop competition circuit in which skiers are judged on their ability to descend through rugged, un-groomed terrain. Having never competed in a freeride competition, Tanner embarks on the latest chapter of his career, struggling against the limits of an aging body while confronting the darkest memories of his past.

We say: Tanner reunited with Constantine Popanicolaou, the creator of T-Hall classics like Show & Prove (2006), Believe (2007) and The Massive (2008), on a new look at the Ski Boss's life as he plies the waters of the Freeride World Tour. Worth a watch? Who are we kidding—this is Tanner Hall we're talking about.

SKIVAS | Coline Ballet-Baz

They say: "SKIVAS is a 100% female ski movie by Coline Ballet-Baz, produced by BUG Visionaries and directed by UPLAND Films. Ten of the best female skiers and snowboarders meet during the 2020 winter season to stack shots in urban, freeride and backcountry, and to show that freeskiing is more than a sport, but a lifestyle and an art. Here is the first taste of what they have been up to."

We say: The year's most exciting women's project comes from Coline Ballet-Baz, who retired from contest skiing only to head straight into the streets and the backcountry with a strong supporting cast of female riders from different disciplines.

Featuring Coline Ballet-Baz, Taylor Lundquist, Kim Lamarre, Rosina Friedel, McKenna Brown, Marion Haerty, Juliette Willmann, Marie Bovard, Emma Dahlström and Jennie-Lee Burmansson.

We say: Ever feel like you're living in a video game? Stomp tricks and ski lines like Jacob Wester, and you might feel like you are. This interesting short from Jacob and Marcus Rönne promises to bend your mind in more than one direction.

Gore Flex | Buldozlife

Fall 2020. @buldozlife

They say: "Trailer. Gore-Flex 2020 by Buldozlife. Coming Fall 2020. CLR."

To those who read these words, we take you with us."

Huck Yeah! | Matchstick Productions

Dropping in September 2020. matchstickpro.com

They say: "Matchstick Productions' 2020 ski film is packed with the best skiers in the world charging hard and having fun in some of the most spectacular locations. Prepare to have your mind blown as Hoji, Sam Kuch, Bobby Brown and the breakout girl posse 'The Blondes' have the time of their lives shredding and stomping. With the global shut-down of the pandemic we are reminded how important it is to spend time outdoors with friends having fun. This film is a balance of personal action segments and location/story-based segments that not only show progressive skiing but interesting stories. Grab a beer, some popcorn and yell 'Huck Yeah!' with the most fun ski movie of 2020."

We say: For a company with a rich history of oddball humor, the trailer for Huck Yeah! is so conventional that it could be satire. Are we being trolled here? "I just want to ski, man! Skiing feels so good." I mean, you're not wrong.

Featuring: Lucas Wachs, Janelle Yip, Sam Kuch, Lucy Sackbauer, Chris Rubens, McKenna Peterson, Connery Lundin, Emily Childs, Bobby Brown, Arianna Tricomi, Mark Abma, Michelle Parker, Eric Hjorliefson, Tonje Kvivik, Karl Fostvedt, Adam Kuch, Banks Gilberti, Jossi Wells, Torin Yater Wallace.

Make Believe | Teton Gravity Research

No release information, premieres beginning in September. tetongravity.com

They say: "'Inspiration is evoked spontaneously and without intention…' Sometimes it comes in the form of a photograph, a chance encounter on a chairlift, or a glimpse at a mountain never seen before. When combined with motivation, the spark of inspiration becomes a dream, and when pursued gives our lives a new purpose. For 25 years TGR has focused on turning 'Make Believe' into reality, from exploring powder stashes in our backyard playground to first descents on unnamed peaks, the ethos of 'live the dream' has defined our adventures. Make Believe celebrates today’s athletes who have committed to this ethos, the ones who have fallen deeply in love with the mountain life, the people who have chosen to live their lives in a particular way, from inception to reality, the ones who choose to make and believe in their dreams."

We say: Sammy Carlson and Karl Fostvedt join TGR's 2020 outing alongside regulars like Durtschi, Hinchcliffe, McNutt, McChesney, Collinson et al. Me likey.
