If you’re old enough to remember when IDEA first dropped back in 2007, you’ll remember these revolutionary images: the switch landings in powder, the huge rockered skis and no poles in the park, the epic Mt. Hood backcountry sessions. If you’re not old enough to remember this, you’re in for a real treat.

In the winter of 2006-07, Eric Pollard, Pep Fujas, Andy Mahre and director Eric Iberg joined forces to create one of the most influential ski movies of the past two decades. Rockered skis were still a controversial, fringe idea (“Why should we make powder skiing easier?” the old guard wondered) and skiing without poles was practically unheard of. In IDEA, Pollard, Fujas and Mahre turned conventions on their heads to show the world a new way of skiing, aided and abetted by Iberg’s expertise in capturing skiers’ unique styles (For reference: Royalty, Stereotype, Education of StyleBE Inspired).

IDEA was a germination point for a lot of good things in skiing: the winning combination of Pollard, Fujas and Mahre went on to found Nimbus Independent, while Iberg teamed up with Tanner Hall to start Inspired Media. We’ve also got Iberg to thank that this and other classic ski movies are available online and free for the next generation of skiers.

If you’ve seen IDEA already, take some time to kick back this Throwback Thursday and enjoy a true classic. And if you’re an IDEA virgin, get ready to appreciate this special moment in skiing’s history.
